Watching corals grow and reproduce is one of the most rewarding parts of reef keeping. It means your system is stable, your parameters are balanced, and your corals are truly thriving. But understanding how corals grow — and how to help them do it — takes a mix of science, observation, and patience.

Most corals in our tanks reproduce asexually, by budding or fragmentation. This is why fragging is such a common practice among reefers — it mimics natural coral growth in the wild. When conditions are ideal (stable alkalinity, calcium, and magnesium, along with balanced nutrients and light), new polyps form and skeletons expand steadily.

Growth isn’t just about numbers. Faster growth doesn’t always mean better health. Inconsistent parameters, too much light, or unstable nutrients can push corals to grow unnaturally or lose color. Instead, focus on consistency — even small, steady growth is a good sign that your corals are comfortable and healthy.

Some advanced hobbyists also explore sexual reproduction — when corals release gametes or planulae — though this is rare in home aquariums. Still, knowing how corals reproduce helps you understand their behavior: why they extend at night, why they release mucus, or why some colonies “self-frag” under stress.
When you see new tips forming or small polyps budding along the base, that’s your reward — proof that your reef is alive and evolving under your care.

進階玩家有時會觀察到有性繁殖現象——像是釋放配子或浮浪幼體——雖然在家用缸中少見，但了解這些行為，能幫助你判斷珊瑚的狀態，例如：夜間延展、分泌黏液或在壓力下自斷。

Alkalinity 7–9 dKH, Calcium 400–450 ppm, Magnesium 1300–1400 ppm — stability matters more than perfection.

Use clean tools and allow frags to heal in low-flow areas before moving them.
